There are two main approaches to the relationship between adventure and health, as you will see, they go hand in hand:
1. Outdoor Adventure for health : Engaging in outdoor adventure activities for the main purpose of improving your health
2. Outdoor Adventure for all : Engaging in outdoor adventure activities despite the constraints of poor health.
Health is one of the biggest concerns that someone will have for most of their life. You want to be healthy and stay healthy , and you want to spend time doing the things that you love.
Outdoor Adventure For Health
In order to be in good health, most of the time it requires that you get some exercises. Most people hate going to the gym.
Why walk on a treadmill when you can walk for miles? (I hate staying in one place).
You must be saying, walk for miles – yeah right! But seriously, I prefer to do a three hour mountain hike where I get all the added benefits of being out there in nature that I love, than to spend thirty minutes at a gym.
With outdoor adventure you get to participate in all your favorite activities, while your body gets the work out that it needs . Especially for the physically demanding ones like biking, mountain climbing etc.
Yes they'd probably be more time consuming, and if you're pressed for time, working out at home or the gym might seem more appealing.
There are however, short outdoor activities that you can engage in outside or around your home such as walking and biking. These are good if you're not in an urban environment.
Adventure can also be a powerful therapy for persons with poor mental health. Some programs in outdoor adventure sell themselves as promoting and improving mental , physical , emotional or spiritual health.
Outdoor Adventure For All
The second approach, outdoor adventure for all, focuses on people who have ill mental or physical health. In some cases persons' view of their current health situation would deter them from participating in outdoor activities.
If you're one of those people, you should remember that these issues may slow you down but they can't stop you. Of all the numerous adventurous activities out there, I'm sure you can find not one, but some of them that put little demand on you whether mentally or physically. In fact, engaging in adventure activities may actually be good for you (Outdoor Adventure for Health remember?) So adventure and health do go hand in hand. Just remember to consult with a doctor before you engage in any activities. You may get better sooner than you think.
